![]() Both manufacturers have produced camera models with serious flaws, focal issues, light-bleed issues, whatever. The Canon vs Nikon debate for professional photographers is a ridiculous one. The real difference between various camera systems lies in the raw image files they produce, and what you can do with those files when processing them… on your computer. Under the same lighting conditions, most cameras produce relatively similar results to the naked eye. I’ve shot using a Phase One digital back, a 5D Mark III, and other camera bodies. I’ve shot on a Canon 60D for many years because I haven’t, until recently, had the funds to upgrade to a better camera. I think your choice of camera (brand or model) is one of the least relevant tools in making your work better. Catch up on the latest season of Seinfeld while you’re at it. But don’t convert your files to DNG just yet! Bookmark this article, come back to it in a year or so once you really understand how to use Lightroom, and I will finish telling you why I don’t use DNG files anymore. Lightroom is basically Bridge and ACR puréed into one beautiful interface. But seriously, you should stop reading this now and migrate your entire workflow to Lightroom. If you’re using Bridge and Adobe Camera Raw (ACR), don’t forget: you meant to call your kids and ask them why Seinfeld has stopped recording on your DVR. On a good computer, the speed difference is microseconds, so small as to be unnoticeable. Two years ago, that may have been beneficial, but now Lightroom has graphics-card hardware acceleration, SSD drives are relatively inexpensive to buy and easy to install, and RAM is inexpensive to upgrade and easy to install. Same goes for Norton and McAfee (perhaps the worst offender of them all).In Lightroom, DNG files open and render previews faster than raw files. You will probably notice other performance improvements too, especially if you have competing antivirus programs operating. Windows' built in AV is excellent and all you need. Keep Windows AV up to date and get rid of any third party antivirus on your system. The best thing to do would be to get rid of anything Avast on your computer entirely - it is literally worse than many actual viruses. A similar situation occured while using ViewNX-i. Try to change the settings of your antivirus program.Ĭzepo david I had a similar problem as you – I got this error every time I wanted to convert the NEF files into JPEG in Capture NX-D. I found out it had been caused my Avast antivirus Ransomware Shield which was blocking those and other programs. converting NEFs in Nikon david debalko: I had a similar problem as you – I got this error every time I wanted to convert the NEF files into JPEG in Capture NX-D.Some software may ignore an error that another does not. I would suspect file or filesystem corruption. I still use NX-D because they, you can get some darn good results out of that slow ugly software. I personally am a fan on RawTherapee but there is a learning curve to be able to be quick and get good results out of RT (plus I also shoot with Fujifilm). If you are looking for other apps to try I have found that DxO PhotoLab is really close to the NX-D results. I gave up on LR a long time ago and there are other things besides color that NX-D will do better than LR (like demosacing). Have you tried other files? Moved the files to another location? Create copies of the files and try the copies? Do you have access to anther computer you can try on? Have you tried converting just one NEF buy using the Command-E(MacOS) keyboard shortcut? I'm thinking about moving to Lightroom, but to get the same color quality we'd have to do more color correction on everything. ![]() I'm able to open the NEFS to DNG in Photoshop Adobe Raw and the files are fine, not damaged, but I prefer the quality and color from NX-D. So after choosing the files and going to convert files I get the message "ended with error" I feel the NX-D program gives me the best quality file. I'm trying to use Nikon NX-D to convert the NEFs to JPGs. It is just this one group of photos giving me problems, 2 folders from the same day, same card, other folders of photos taken before and since are working fine. ![]()
